Perfect Paint Colors for Your Kitchen Cabinets
Choosing the right paint color for your kitchen cabinets can be tough. Here's how to make the best decision:
Consider Your Style:
Classic: Opt for timeless colors like white or off-white.
Modern: Go bold with black or navy blue.
Think About the Other Colors: Your cabinet paint should complement your countertops, backsplash, walls, and flooring.
Light Matters:
Lots of light: Choose brighter colors.
Limited light: Opt for lighter colors to create an airy feel.
Not Sure? Experiment! Paint samples on cardboard and see how they look in your kitchen at different times of day.
Neutral is Your Friend! White cabinets can work! Add contrast with darker countertops for depth. Warm whites and neutrals are popular choices.
Bonus Tip: Look at your clothes for color inspiration! This can reveal your color preferences.
Remember: Painting samples is key! See how the colors look in your kitchen with natural and artificial light.
Thoughts while choosing paint colors for your kitchen:
Daylight exposure. A small kitchen looks bigger in lighter colors.
Daylight exposure is an important factor to consider when choosing paint colors for your kitchen. Lighter colors will reflect natural light and make your kitchen feel brighter and larger, while darker colors will absorb light and make your kitchen feel smaller and more intimate.
If you have a small kitchen with limited natural light, I would recommend choosing light, airy colors such as white, cream, or light gray. These colors will help to make your kitchen feel more spacious and inviting. You can also add pops of color with accessories, such as towels, curtains, or artwork.
If you have a larger kitchen with plenty of natural light, you have more options when it comes to paint colors. You could choose a darker color, such as navy blue or black, for a more dramatic look. Or, you could choose a medium-toned color, such as beige or greige, for a more neutral look.
Look in your clothes closet for color inspiration. Yes, look at the colors that you wear. This is a good starting point for understanding your color personality. I remember in the ‘80s when people use to ask, “what season are you?” This idea was to have a color analysis to understand what season of colors work best for you, and to help you choose and purchase a flattering wardrobe around this defined color analysis and season palette. For example, my sister is definitely a Fall season, and I am Summer. What season are you?
Paint a few sample colors in the room. Both natural and artificial lighting plays a huge role in how the hues appear at different times during the day.
Don’t Forget Other Material Samples: Before selecting your color, you also need to see how the color interacts with existing or new furnishings, like your carpet, furniture, fabrics, and more. Make sure to collect as many of these samples as possible and place them in the room to assist you in selecting the best color possible. No one will be as passionate about the project as you. Chantilly Lace
As delicate and refined as the lace it was named after, this crisp, clean white evokes images of pure silk, soft linen and simpler times.
Design Tip:
Color can really affect your mood, so when it comes to selecting a color, choose a color that gives off pleasant vibes. I know this sounds a little woo-woo, but ask yourself this question when considering different options. You may find an answer for which is the best home kitchen paint color for you.
Design Tip:
“An off-white or warm white offers an updated look to the stark whites used previously in 1998 - 2022 . These colors shown below are still a fresh light look without being all white or super bright white everywhere.
An off-white or warmer white/ gray are also great backdrops to a white countertop.” - dvd
Wickham Gray
This color is part of the Historic Color collection. A collection of 191 time-honored hues comprise this popular palette. Steeped in tradition, the refined, elegant colors of the Historical Collection deliver timeless color that can be used in traditional as well as contemporary spaces. Unveiled in 1976 to celebrate the US Bicentennial, the collection of 191 colors was inspired by America's historic landmarks.
HALE NAVY
Blue in general is a great color and one that I usually recommend. It is strong, pleasing and calming. Once you walk into a room in this color, you know you’ve arrived. This is the most popular blue in my book for a reason. This is a great color for strength and intellectual reflection.
Imperial Gray
Despite its name, there is actually a strong blue undertone in this color that makes it so delightful. This is a great color for Kitchens and is often used in place of Light Blue by Farrow and Ball. (pictured above) This color is part of the Classic Color Collection, timeless, elegant, Classic Colors guarantee beautiful, usable color all the time, every time.
SEA SALT
NOTHING lackluster ABOUT THIS COLOR. This color is light, bright, and warm.
A similar option is Silver Bells 1458 is also a great option that is crisp with a little grey-blue.
GENTLEMAN’S GRAY
Handsome like a suit. This is a complex yet sophisticated color. Add it to your list of consideration for a dark color.
Stonington Gray HC- 170
And of course, you can’t talk about gray without mentioning historical colors Stonington Gray and its sister Coventry Gray. They are both very neutral – not too cool and not too warm – and would look great in the living room, bedroom, and kitchen. I have been using Stonington Gray for many years. I do try other grays but keep coming back to Stonington. It’s just so appealing.
SIMPLY WHITE
Simply White was the Color of The Year in 2017 and continues to shine as one of the Top 10 sellers for Benjamin Moore. It is a versatile neutral that can be used for wall color or trim and can be used in any decorating style. To balance an all-white space, consider touches of natural wood tones, or black or dark espresso!
Design Tip:
I am not calling out the color names on the photos I have offered here, because how a color looks in a picture, is not how it will look in your home. You have to know that all the pictures in magazines and on Pinterest that you see have been altered with filters and printing techniques to create a pleasing and inspiring image, not to represent color correctly. You must buy sample pots or larger sheets from your designer, to see how it works in your room and with the furnishings as well.
KENTUCKY HAZE
This is a new color for me, and I am in love. It is subtle and fresh. It may look gray here, but it has the blue undertones that make it a great color for both color families. When it comes to the psychology of color, Blue is like the sky and water, and it has calming factors. It is not too heavy, and it goes perfectly with rustic wood tones found in furniture.
Select a color that makes you happy.
How do you do that? I recommend that you purchase a few sample pots of colors you like whether online or at your local Benjamin Moore Supplier. Paint the top colors you are considering either on the walls or on pieces of poster board, and live with them for a few days in the room you will be painting. It is important to be viewing them at different times of the day when there are different light intensities. You may be surprised how you like certain colors better at certain times of the day in your work area. Skip this step and you may regret it, or you may end up painting your room twice!
