How to Choose the Right Tub Filler and Tub Faucets

A well-designed bathroom isn't complete without a functional and stylish tub filler. Whether you have a spacious soaking tub or a more compact model, a tub filler can enhance both the aesthetics and functionality of your space.

Exposed vs. Concealed Tub Fillers: Understanding the Options

When choosing a tub filler, you'll encounter two primary options: exposed and concealed.

  • Exposed Tub Fillers: These sleek fixtures are mounted on metal legs, adding a dramatic and contemporary touch to your bathroom. They offer a range of design options and can be a focal point in the room.

  • Concealed Tub Fillers: Also known as deck-mounted fillers, these fixtures are discreetly installed within the tub deck, creating a cleaner and more minimalist look. They are often preferred in bathrooms with a modern or minimalist aesthetic.

Selecting the Right Style for Your Space

The choice between exposed and concealed tub fillers ultimately depends on your personal preference and the overall design style of your bathroom. Consider the following factors:

  • Tub Size: Larger tubs typically require a more powerful tub filler to ensure efficient filling.

  • Aesthetic: Exposed tub fillers can make a bold statement, while concealed fillers offer a more understated look and more traditional feel.

Flow Rate - A critical consideration to address before the walls are closed.

Flow rate is undoubtedly one of the most crucial factors to address before sealing the walls of your bathroom. A slow-filling tub can quickly turn into a frustrating experience, as the water may become cold by the time you're ready to soak.

Achieving Optimal Flow

  • To ensure a satisfying bathing experience, a flow rate of approximately 10 -15 gallons per minute (GPM) is generally recommended. This rate will fill a standard 6×3-foot tub in approximately four minutes when using a properly installed tub filler.

  • Achieving the desired flow rate often depends on the plumbing behind the wall. Ideally, you should have 3/4-inch piping to support a GPM of 15 for larger tubs.

  • It's essential to discuss your desired flow rate with both your contractor and sales consultant. Double-checking the information provided is crucial, as making changes after the walls are closed can be challenging, if not impossible.

By carefully considering flow rate and ensuring proper plumbing, you can create a luxurious and enjoyable bathing experience in your bathroom.

Exposed vs. Concealed: A Matter of Style

The choice between an exposed or concealed tub filler can significantly impact the overall look and feel of your bathroom.

  • Exposed Tub Fillers: These fixtures, typically mounted on metal legs, offer a more industrial or casual vibe. They can be a focal point in the room and add a touch of drama.

  • Concealed Tub Fillers: Also known as deck-mounted fillers, these fixtures are installed within the tub deck, creating a cleaner and more formal look. They can help to maintain a minimalist aesthetic.

How far should you mount the filler from the tub?

The faucet should be located 3” to 6” over the rim of the tub to avoid splashing water out of the tub, and the controls should be at least 33” from the floor.
