Closer to NATURE

Many of our clients have expressed a heightened desirer to live closer to nature, hence the latest design trend: an increase in outdoor living spaces. Most of today’s new homes have a covered porch. Trend #3: Organic Modern:

Organic / Modern is a prevalent theme seen in hoteling, boutique hoteling, eco-hotels.  They are all mimicking the feeling and elements of a tailored and crafted home.

We see this look at the ACE Hotel, The Standard and  The W to name a few. The Williamsburg Hotel is full of material expression with a mix of periods and styles creating a Vogue Brooklyn feel, yet it is a very elegant design.

Hubbardton Forge:

HUBBARDTON FORGE

Organic Modern as seen at Hubbardton Forge. shown above is the Carin Pendant. This is a handmade and crafted in Vermont, and beautifully representing an organic shape and structure.

Thick hand-poured glass and cast steel “stones” are artistically stacked, and suspended by thin cables. The LED light flows over the steel, and through the seeded glass, to seemingly glow from the inside—creating an organically soothing composition. Everyone needs more balance in their lives; perhaps beautifully balanced lighting is a great way to start. Available in two sizes and nine finish options to live in harmony with any space.

VERELLEN

VERELLEN FURNITURE

Organic modern can create a welcoming home for entertaining. No matter your price point or style choices. We saw the introduction of many wonderful elements to create the perfect room.  The vogue hip Brooklyn to the Charleston classicist, as well as the Naturalist and Sustainably sources products all with the ability to be chic as well as comfortable.

A casual elegant setting from the city to the seashore. We've already started sourcing these new introductions for our clients this month. It's very exciting.

Trend #4: THE 2020 COLOR TREND: CREAM

  • Let's talk about Color in fabrics and furniture: The overall pallet was again Washed whites, Blush and sandy greys accented with metals in gold. It was everywhere. We also saw  A mix of woods dominating with cerused oaks, fumed oaks, and walnut leading in popularity. textural linens and the rich layered fabrics for the Sofa and Lounge Chairs.  My holy trinity of the furniture at the market this year WERE Verellen, Cisco Brothers, EJ VICTOR, and Alfonso Marina.

  • Color: The Cream as a base color in furnishings and envelopes, is also used to balance the blush/ soft pink or gray in many spaces with pops of color or color blocks in furniture and soft furnishings.

  • Everyone was talking about the shift from the millennial pink, to a softer pink and complementary palettes like the color “first light” from bm or the “calming pink” by farrow and ball.

  • Nature-inspired colors, from the sky and earth. But for me, I saw a lot of creams, with these earth accents.  The with interiors has shifted, not too beige but more of a cream palette, with a cool light grey and pops of color and natural materials.   I have a lot of images on my blog to illustrate the use of these colors in our interiors.

  • Gray is still a decor player but as I’m reading I keep hearing that the shift is moving from gray to cream / bone colors. In other words from cool neutrals to warmer ones.

  • Colors of the Year are announced annually. For 2020 Benjamin Moore, selected First Light, a soft pink. This is an update to the MILLENIAL PINK of 2017. THIS COLOR WAS EVERYWHERE!

Trend #5: Themes: Calming

  • Themes: Calming, Weathered Mediterranean, Eco-Friendly, Nature or Naturally inspired with my favorite, a mix of vintage and of course. : I know that's a lot to take in, but it was really all there and they relate to each other. Wicker made a big impact on me this season in the furniture offerings with hints of vintage shapes.  Lots of wicker and caning in furniture and lighting, these were everywhere. These items are at home in a contemporary environment as well as a more traditional setting, hence their success.

The Kitchen is not a utilitarian room anymore. It is a part of the open plan, part of the interior design theme.

Trend #6: THE KITCHEN REVOLUTION

  • The kitchen revolution As someone who also works on kitchens, We are seeing that the kitchen has changed to become the dominant room of the home. As a result,  more kitchen design resources are popping up at High Point Market. The Kitchen is not the utilitarian room anymore. It is an open and flowing part of the home and is an important design element in most homes.  We spend more time in the kitchen than most other rooms in our homes with family and friends. It makes sense that interior design must flow from this room in harmony with the rest of the home decor. It's no longer an independent room, its part of the overall design theme.  It is open, beautiful and leading the design many times as part of the overall design in many homes.

THE RECAP

To me, I've noticed all these trends in decor still appear to mimic that of luxury hoteling.

Hotels are leading the current residential home market with these earthy textures and a relaxed elegance expressed in the handmade materials and structures. I think this is a trend with staying power.

I hope you enjoyed these thoughts and observations.  Thank you

Bonus Highlight: The Color Black

Tuxedo, classic, we are seeing more of the black and white accented with gold metals.
